Apple updates ‘Field Test’ app on iOS 10.3!

Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 10.3 yesterday right after they released iOS 10.2.1 to the public. The field test app is a “hidden app” within iOS which can be accessed from the phone app by dialing *3001#12345#* on the dial pad.

The field test app can be used to quickly find out a lot of information about your cellular connection like the LTE Band you’re connected to, the bandwidth available etc.. Apple hasn’t updated the app for a very long time fence falling behind the curve and not showing a lot of the information the new iPhone(s) now support like carrier aggregation.

The new screenshots show that the app is now updated for the larger screens, shows a lot more information about different “carriers” of LTE bands and most importantly showing the current carrier aggregation status.

Currently the new app is only on the Intel version of the iPhone 7s’ but, it should roll out to other devices in future betas.

UPDATED: Betas for iOS 10 Jailbreaks have been released!

UPDATE: 1/5

The most stable version currently is BETA 3. Even thought it’s the most stable.. it’s not stable stable and substrate is still not enabled.

Luca has released a for the iPhone 6S TSMC devices on the Telegram group. With this users can jailbreak their TSMC devices – however it’s not stable at all.

qwertyoruiopz on Twitter has released a iPA on his website containing jailbreak (sort-of) for some devices.

His jailbreak is legit as confirmed by Saurik, the creator of Cydia. However currently nobody is able to use the jailbreak as they would normally expect.

The iPA file has to be signed in a special way so I can be loaded onto your device. You can then use the app to jailbreak your device however this BETA version does not include Cydia or mobile substrate (a component needs for almost all tweaks and sometimes Cydia itself).

We’re closely monitoring this release and we will update this page with the current details.

As of right now we suggest not trying to jailbreak your device unless you’re a developer as you could ruin your device.

Sprint and Shentel have completed their acquisition of nTelos.

On May 6th Shentel – a local provider has completed their acquisition nTelos – a Virginia based wireless provider. Shentel works in conjunction with Sprint to expand their network. Just last year Sprint was able to enable LTE in most of Virginia including Roanoke, Va. and some of West Va. Read More.

Shentel has acquired all of nTelos’s stocks, wireless network assets, retail shops and ~290,000 existing nTelos customers.

What Shentel will be doing next

Customers

All nTelos customers will receive notices via mail, email, text etc.. To complete their server move over to Sprint or Boost Mobile (A sprint MVNO). We’re not 100% how Sprint will be charging the new customer and what plans will go to what carrier (Sprint or Boost Mobile) however it seems like the FRAWG nTelos plans will be transferred to Boost Mobile.

However we do know this:

  • All nTelos customer will still be able to use their nTelos phones and service until they have completed their transition.

Once you receive your instructions from Sprint, you’ll have the following options:

  • Choose a customized Sprint plan which is going to be same or better than what you have now and will include – Unlimited Text, Data, and the same amount of data you have right now along with the same price as what you pay now.
  • Customer will also have the option to move over a standard Sprint plan and they will not have to worry about their contract ETF or anything like that.

If a customer does not want to switch over to Sprint – they will have the option to change carrier when their contract(s) are over.

Coverage

For all nTelos customer the coverage will improve all now you’ll have access to Sprint’s LTE coverage nationwide not just 3G, like before.

Sprint/Shentel are also going to be investing $350 Millon into the network over the next two year, so be prepared for carrier aggregation (Sprint’s fastest LTE network. Up-to 100 Mbps however much faster as time goes on, along with 5G like speeds.).

Phones

All customers with a handset – iPhone 5C or older – will keep their device, a new SIM card will just be inserted. For all other customers, you phone will be replacement for the new network improvements. Most likely, without ETF charges.

Store

All nTelos retail store will be converted to Sprint-branded stores. The employees will remain the same as of now.

You can visit any nTelos store or call customer service to move over to Sprint.

As of now there isn’t any news about the jailbreak for iOS 9.2 or 9.1 but, a twitter user, EveryApplesPro shared a rumor tweet:

You can keep up with the latest jailbreak news on /r/jailbreak!

Apple sued over Wi-Fi Assist overage data charges for over $5 Million Dollars!

The latest iOS system – iOS 9 has a feature called “Wi-Fi Assist” which automatically switches to the cellular data network when you’re connected to a poor wifi connection. This feature is turned on by default on iOS 9 with poor explanation of what it does or the risks the come with using it.

Apple is currently being used for over $5 Million Dollars for the data overage charges caused by the feature automatically using the data connection and for a poor explanation of what the feature does. The lawsuit accuses Apple for “Violating California’s Unfair Competition Law and of negligent misrepresentation”. It (lawsuit) was filled by William Scott Phillips and Suzanne Schmidt Phillips on Friday.

… you might use more cellular data. For most users, this should only be a small percentage higher than previous usage …

There is no warning or indication except for a small “cellular data” icon that phone is using your cellular data even if you’re on Wi-Fi. Apple reported on their site it’s should on increase their data usage by a tiny bit and not using almost 75% of their data plan as this user reported:

On Apple’s website they have stated that Wi-Fi Assist is only used for foreground system apps like Safari when the Wi-Fi is too slow load a web page and not for any other apps in the background or the ones that download any type of content like, Video and/or Audio Streaming; unless it’s a system app like Apple Music, Safari, Mail or more.. [button color=”” size=”small” type=”” target=”_blank” link=”https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205296″]- Apple[/button]

The only way to stop iOS from using your data without your knowledge is to turn of turn off “Wi-Fi Assist” by Going into Settings > Cellular > (At the very bottom) Turn off “Wi-Fi Assist”.

Apple has kindly declined the request for a comment.

The iPhone 6S and the 6S Plus are here!

Just a few hours ago, Apple announced it’s new generation of iPhones; the 6S and the 6S Plus. The new phones have seem to have brought some very interesting features to the table.

3D Touch

The new iPhone were exactly what they were rumored to be. The new iPhone have “3D Touch” – a fancy name for force touch. 3D Touch on the new iPhones is a combination between the right click menu and the preview feature on the Mac.

For Example: You can force tap on an iMessage Conversation and a preview of the conversation will pop up. You can also interact more with the action by pressing harder on the screen.

Developers can also integrate 3D Touch into their own apps, One of the apps that has already been updated is Instagram. In Instagram you can 3D Touch on the thumbnail of an image and a preview of the image will pop-up!

Camera

Photos

The Camera on the new iPhones have a extremely improved! For the past year Apple has stuck with an 8 MP camera while other manufacturers have had 12-16 MP cameras. Apple has been backing off on adding more megapixels because if you put more pixels in the same senor size the color accuracy, low light performance tend to be quite poor. Apple has found a few ways with help with the problem. This year they have gone with a 12 MP camera and if the color accuracy and the low light performance are as good or better then the current phones then this will easily be the best camera on a smartphone.

The front selfie camera have also been upgrade with a 5 MP senor. This time you also have a “simulated” flash with will use the sensors on the phone to match the light temperature around you to flash the the screen itself for a “ok” lit selfie.

Live Photos

Live Photos is features that takes a sequence of photos with audio (not video, apparently) 1.5 second before and after the photos has been taken. So when you 3D Touch on the photo in the gallery I will play the sequence showing the moment that led upto the picture. You can set these “Live Photos” as your wallpaper or as a watch face on your Apple Watch.

Video

Since Apple decide to upgrade to a 12 MP camera. You will be able to take 4K Video at 30 fps on the phone. Since 4K videos take so much space, you will be able to choose what quality you record your video at in the settings.

Technology

Processor

The new iPhone have the Apple A9; Which is Apple’s own 3rd Generation 64-bit processor. The new A9 CPU is up to 80% faster then the A8’s CPU. The GPU on the A9 is up to 90% faster. Apple is claiming the CPU power to be “Desktop class” and the GPU to be “Console class”.

Data Connection

The Wifi and LTE performance has been improved just a little bit; The new phones support up to 23 LTE bands with a maximum of 300 Mbps through-put. Wifi hasn’t been changed a lot with speeds up to 866 Mbps. Of cource your’re not going to get these speeds just because you have the phone. These speeds are the maximum throughput for the phones.

Price

You will be able to buy the new phones at the same price as the current ones so; 16GB models for the 6S start at $199 w/ 2-year carrier contact and $299 for the 6S Plus w/ a 2-carrier contact.

If you don’t want to lock-in with a contact with your carrier then you can finnance the phones with Apple for $32.45 /month for iPhone 6S (24-month) and/or $37.45 for the iPhone 6S Plus (24-month).

Apple also has a new program this year called “iPhone Upgrade Program” which will give you a new phone every year! You can learn more about it here!
